Public charter schools have grown to represent educational opportunity for millions of children across the country. Despite this growth and the overall importance of the charter school sector, data on charter schools remains difficult to find and collect. The National Alliance is in an ideal position to take up this work and serve as the eminent source of comprehensive data on charter schools. As leaders of the sector, we compile and thoroughly review data from multiple administrative sources, while also accurately identifying and tracking charter schools to better reflect the unique environment in which they operate. The Knowledge Base is the first comprehensive compendium resulting from these efforts. Readers will not only find information on the size and growth of the charter school sector over time, but on other important topics such as the demographics of the students that charter schools serve, where charter schools are located, information on the management and governance of charter schools, and other selected topics.
